Health

Europe is facing serious healthcare challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the importance of coordinating health research and innovation among European countries.


This cluster aims to promote and protect human health and well-being, prevent diseases and decrease the burden of diseases and disabilities on people and communities, support the transformation of health care systems in their efforts towards fair access to innovative, sustainable and high quality health care for everyone, and foster an innovative, sustainable and globally competitive European health industry. Cluster Health is anticipating six destinations:

 

  1. Staying healthy in a rapidly changing environment – a focus on major societal challenges such as diet and health (obesity), ageing and demographic change, mental health, digital empowerment in health literacy, and personalized prevention.
  2. Living and working in a health-promoting environment – filling the knowledge gaps in areas such as indoor and outdoor air pollution, chemicals, non-ionizing radiation (electromagnetic fields), urbanisation, climate and other environmental changes, socio-economic inequalities, and changing working environments.
  3. Tackling diseases and reducing disease burden – aims at:
    • better understanding of diseases, their drivers and consequences
    • better methodologies and diagnostics
    • better surveillance, prevention, detection, treatment and crisis management of infectious disease threats
    • innovative health technologies
    • new and advanced therapies for non-communicable diseases
    • scientific evidence for improved/tailored policies and legal frameworks and to inform
    • major policy initiatives at global level.
  4. Ensuring access to innovative, sustainable and high-quality health care – modernizing health care systems in the EU, improving the quality of health care, supporting evidence-based health care decisions and enhancing the development and uptake of innovative health care services and solutions.
  5. Unlocking the full potential of new tools, technologies and digital solutions for a healthy society - aims to promote the development of tools, technologies and digital solutions for treatments, medicines, medical devices and improved health outcomes.
  6. Maintaining an innovative, sustainable and globally competitive health-related industryThis destination aims to use research and innovation to integrate various health technologies into the European health and care sector.
